• You have dental anxiety or phobia. Even moderate anxiety can make it hard to sit still, follow instructions, or return for follow-up appointments. Sedation removes that barrier.

We offer three levels of sedation, and we’ll recommend the right one based on your anxiety level, the procedure, and your medical history. Here’s how they compare:

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is the gentlest option. You breathe it in through a small mask that sits over your nose, and within a few minutes you’ll feel relaxed and a little floaty. You’re awake and can still respond to instructions. When the procedure is done, we switch you to pure oxygen and the effects clear up fast. Most patients feel completely normal within minutes and can drive themselves home.

IV Sedation

With IV sedation, medication is delivered directly into your bloodstream through a small needle in your arm. It works quickly and puts you into a deeply relaxed state. You may drift in and out of awareness, but you won’t feel pain and most patients have little to no memory of the procedure afterward. You’ll need someone to drive you home and plan to take it easy for the rest of the day.

Deep Sedation

Deep sedation is the most profound level we offer. You are essentially asleep throughout the procedure and will have no awareness or memory of it. This option is typically reserved for extensive treatments or patients with severe dental phobia. It requires careful pre-screening and monitoring throughout, and you’ll need a responsible adult with you for the day.

How to Prepare for Your Sedation Appointment

We’ll give you specific instructions before your appointment based on the type of sedation you’re having. In general, here’s what to expect:

• Fasting: For IV and deep sedation, you’ll need to avoid eating or drinking for several hours beforehand (typically 6-8 hours). We’ll confirm the exact window when we book you.
• Arrange a ride: If you’re having IV or deep sedation, you cannot drive yourself home. Arrange for a trusted person to pick you up and stay with you for a few hours after.
• Share your full medical history: Let us know about all medications, supplements, and any health conditions. This is especially important for sedation, as some medications interact with sedatives.
• Wear comfortable clothing. Loose, comfortable clothes make it easier for us to place monitoring equipment and keep you comfortable throughout.
• Ask your questions beforehand. There are no silly questions. If you’re nervous, call us before the appointment. We’d rather answer ten questions in advance than have you arrive anxious.

What to Expect During and After Treatment

Once you’re settled in the chair, we’ll administer your sedation and give it time to take effect before we start any treatment. You’ll be monitored throughout: heart rate, oxygen levels, and blood pressure are tracked the entire time.

Most patients describe sedation dentistry as uneventful in the best possible way. The procedure happens, and then it’s done. For IV and deep sedation especially, it often feels like no time passed at all.

After your appointment:

• You may feel groggy, foggy, or a little off for a few hours. This is completely normal.
• Avoid making important decisions, signing documents, or operating machinery for the rest of the day.
• Stick to soft foods and stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol.
• Any soreness at the treatment site is normal and typically resolves within a day or two.
• We’ll follow up with you to check in and answer any questions.

The recovery experience varies depending on the sedation level. Nitrous oxide patients are usually back to normal within the hour. IV and deep sedation patients should plan for a full rest day.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe? Eligibility and Considerations

Yes, when administered by trained professionals with proper monitoring, sedation dentistry is safe and well-established. Our team is trained in sedation protocols, and we take pre-screening seriously precisely because it makes the experience safer for everyone.

Sedation is generally well-suited for most healthy adults. That said, it isn’t right for everyone. We’ll review your health history in detail before recommending any sedation option.

Sedation may not be appropriate if you:
